A better heading

Keep your phone flat, screen up, in portrait orientation. Move away from metal objects, magnets and electrical equipment. The reading refers to the top edge of your phone; the north reference depends on its sensor and browser.

Desktop computers and some phone browsers do not provide an absolute compass heading. In that case this tool cannot display a direction. A phone sensor is an estimate, not a replacement for navigation equipment.
